The Federal National Mortgage Organization (FNMA), generally called Fannie Mae, is an USA government-sponsored business (GSE) and, because 1968, an openly traded company. Founded in 1938 during the Great Anxiety as part of the New Deal, the corporation's objective is to expand the additional home mortgage market by securitizing mortgage in the form of mortgage-backed securities (MBS), enabling lenders to reinvest their properties into more lending and essentially increasing the number of loan providers in the mortgage market by minimizing the reliance on locally based savings and loan associations (or "second hands"). Its brother organization is the Federal Mortgage Home Mortgage Firm (FHLMC), much better referred to as Freddie Mac.
